Barry Futter
There are some surfers who just arrive on the scene and no one really knows about. Barry is one of those guys who just seems to slip under the radar by hooking into some big ones when no one is really looking. Barry has a secret weapon though, some thing that will hold him in good stead amongst the barrels of Dungeons – Barry is probably the fittest guy in the water.
A keen and dedicated tri athlete, Barry spends his time working on fitness and a healthy lifestyle. A run around Chapman’s Peak is normal, followed by a long and serious surf in some big waves, is a normal day for Barry.
“He rips,” said his long time friend Miles Masterson. “Whether it’s in small surf or giant waves, he is always on it. Surfs good in the barrels as well, but is dedicated to when it gets big.”
Barry runs an adventure centre, running corporate teambuilding by putting people through their paces. It seems natural that he is going to be a stand-out in something as extreme as big wave surfing.
A full-on dark horse, Barry is one of those surfers that completely upset the apple cart like Twiggy Baker did at the Mavericks Big Wave Contest in 2006, mowing down the competition all the way to first place. It is quite possible that a surfer like Barry, ultra fit and ultra competitive, could find himself catching two perfect bombs in every heat on the way to the final. Don’t be surprised if he’s standing on the podium.
